The Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards (WMELS) provide a comprehensive framework outlining developmental expectations for children from birth through seven. Developed collaboratively by the Wisconsin Departments of Public Instruction, Children and Families, and Health Services, along with the Wisconsin Head Start State Collaboration Office and the Wisconsin Early Childhood Collaborating Partners, WMELS aim to ensure that all children are healthy, nurtured, safe, and successful.
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) leads early childhood education in the state by overseeing the implementation of the WMELS, which support children from birth through first grade. It also defines statewide Core Competencies for early childhood professionals to ensure consistent, developmentally appropriate practice, and collaborates on training, technical assistance, and grant initiatives to enhance quality and system alignment across communities.
