What's Different Today
Wonder often begins when we notice something we didn't see before. In this playful family activity, children carefully observe familiar objects while a grown-up makes one small change. As they compare, describe, and discuss what they notice, they'll discover that slowing down and looking closely can reveal surprising details hiding in everyday moments.
Instructions
Arrange 4–6 familiar objects on a table and invite your child to take a careful look at each one.
Encourage them to describe what they notice before asking them to close their eyes.
While their eyes are closed, make one simple change by removing an object, swapping two objects, turning one around, or adding a new item.
Invite your child to open their eyes and look carefully to discover what changed.
Talk about how they figured it out, then take turns making new changes and discovering something different together.
Materials
Small table or flat surface
4–6 familiar household objects (toy, spoon, book, leaf, block, etc.)
Learning Benefits
Strengthens observation and visual discrimination skills.
Encourages descriptive language and meaningful conversations.
Builds attention, working memory, and flexible thinking through playful exploration.
Supports persistence and confidence as children carefully compare and discover changes.
Fosters curiosity by encouraging children to slow down, notice details, and share their ideas.
Infant & Toddler Adaptations
Begin with just two or three familiar objects and make one obvious change, such as removing or replacing an item. Encourage your child to point, touch, and describe what they notice using simple language like, "Something changed!" Keep the experience playful and celebrate careful observation rather than finding the "right" answer.
