Ramp Roll Experiment
Children use ramps to explore how different objects move. By changing the height and testing different materials, they observe speed, distance, and movement while building early problem-solving skills.
Materials
Cardboard pieces or boards (for ramps)
Blocks or books (to change height)
Small objects (cars, balls, pinecones, etc.)
Instructions
Set up a simple ramp using cardboard and blocks.
Invite children to choose an object.
Ask: “What do you think will happen?”
Release the object from the top of the ramp.
Observe how fast or far it moves.
Change the height of the ramp and try again.
Learning Benefits
Builds understanding of cause and effect
Encourages prediction and observation
Strengthens coordination and control
Introduces early physics concepts
Supports problem-solving through testing ideas
Infant & Toddler Adaptations
Use a low, stable ramp and larger rolling objects. Focus on watching objects move rather than predicting outcomes. Use simple language such as “go,” “fast,” and “down,” and allow repeated exploration of rolling and releasing.
