Push and Distance Test
Children explore how force affects movement by pushing objects across a surface and observing how far they travel. By testing different amounts of force, they begin to compare outcomes and understand cause and effect.
Materials
Small objects (cars, balls, blocks)
Flat surface (floor or table)
Tape or markers (to mark distance)
Instructions
Place a starting line on the floor or table.
Invite children to choose an object.
Ask: “What do you think will happen if we push it softly? Hard?”
Push the object gently and observe how far it goes.
Push the same object harder and compare the distance.
Mark or notice where each object stops.
Learning Benefits
Builds understanding of force and motion
Encourages testing and comparing outcomes
Strengthens coordination and control
Supports early problem-solving
Expands descriptive language
Infant & Toddler Adaptations
Use larger objects and model simple pushing actions. Focus on “go” and “stop” while allowing children to explore pushing with their hands. Emphasize repetition and movement rather than comparison.
