Plant Stories Basket
Children interact with a collection of plants while engaging in simple storytelling. As they explore textures, scents, and appearances, they begin to connect plants to experiences, traditions, and imagination through guided conversation.
Materials
A small collection of plants (herbs, flowers, leaves, vegetables, or seeds)
A basket or tray
A cloth or natural fabric (optional, for presentation)
Picture cards or simple story prompts (optional)
Instructions
Arrange the plant items in a basket or on a tray in an inviting way.
Invite children to explore the items using their senses—touch, smell, and look closely.
Choose one item and begin a simple story (e.g., “This leaf grew in the sunshine…” or “This herb is used in cooking special meals…”).
Encourage children to add to the story or create their own ideas about the plant.
Talk together about where plants come from, how people use them, or what they remind children of.
Invite children to choose a favorite plant and share their own “story” about it.
