Grass, pine needles, or small branches
Washable paint
Paper
Shallow paint trays
Instructions
Invite children to explore the natural materials using their hands.
Demonstrate dipping a leaf or stick into paint.
Encourage children to make marks on paper using different materials.
Support children in comparing textures (smooth, rough, soft, bumpy).
Encourage experimentation with layering, pressing, dragging, and tapping.
Reflect with children on how different materials create different marks.
Learning Benefits
Encourages creative expression and experimentation
Builds understanding of cause and effect
Strengthens fine motor skills and coordination
Expands descriptive language and observation skills
Connects children to natural materials through hands-on exploration
Infant & Toddler Adaptations
Provide larger natural materials such as big leaves or bundled grass for easier grasping. Offer a limited color palette and allow children to explore stamping and pressing rather than controlled painting. Focus on sensory language such as “soft,” “wet,” and “squish.”
