Curious Contraption Lab
Welcome to the Curious Contraption Lab—a place where science and imagination meet. Children choose a playful Mystery Mission, explore everyday materials, and invent an original contraption to solve the challenge. As they imagine, create, test, and revise their designs, they strengthen creative problem-solving, persistence, communication, and early engineering skills while discovering that even the most extraordinary inventions can begin with a simple question: “What if?”
Instructions
Introduce the Curious Contraption Lab and invite children to become inventors.
Choose one Mystery Mission Card and read the whimsical challenge aloud.
Explore the available materials and imagine possible solutions together.
Create a contraption using any combination of materials.
Test the invention and notice what happens.
Revise the contraption by changing, adding, removing, or rearranging materials.
Celebrate each invention by inviting children to explain what it does and how it works.
Materials
Recycled materials, such as cardboard tubes, small boxes, lids, and cartons
Wooden blocks or loose parts
Craft sticks
Pipe cleaners
String or yarn
Clothespins or binder clips
Natural materials, such as pinecones, sticks, stones, and leaves
Masking or painter’s tape

Learning Benefits
Open-ended invention strengthens imagination, originality, and flexible thinking.
Building and testing contraptions supports early engineering and cause-and-effect understanding.
Revising ideas helps children develop persistence and view unexpected results as part of learning.
Explaining how an invention works builds descriptive vocabulary, storytelling, and communication.
Shared problem-solving encourages collaboration, listening, and respect for different ideas.
Whimsical challenges help children connect scientific thinking with joyful imaginative play.
Infant & Toddler Adaptations
Offer large, safe materials such as cardboard tubes, wooden blocks, fabric pieces, and natural loose parts. Encourage children to stack, connect, roll, balance, and explore alongside an adult rather than completing a Mystery Mission. Model simple words such as build, connect, roll, balance, and discover, celebrating curiosity through shared play.
