Creative Discovery Tray

This open-ended process art activity encourages children to experiment with mixed media materials while exploring layering, arranging, texture, artistic decision-making, and self-expression through hands-on creative play experiences.

Instructions

  1. Arrange the materials in an inviting tray or workspace with limited objects spaced apart.

  2. Invite children to explore the materials freely before beginning to create.

  3. Encourage children to layer, arrange, tape, draw, and experiment using the materials in different ways.

  4. Talk together about textures, colors, shapes, and artistic choices during the process.

  5. Allow children to revisit, redesign, and continue expanding their artwork over time.

Materials

  • Recycled cardboard or paper pieces

  • Fabric scraps or ribbon

  • Stickers or washi tape

  • Glue sticks

  • Crayons, markers, or paint sticks

  • Buttons, paper tubes, or loose parts

  • Tray or basket for organizing materials

Infant & Toddler Adaptations
