This collaborative literacy and SEL activity encourages children to explore storytelling, identity, creativity, and belonging through art, conversation, and shared classroom experiences.
Materials
Paper squares or cardstock pieces
Crayons, markers, or paint
Glue sticks
Fabric scraps or collage materials
Family photos (optional)
Large display paper or bulletin board space
Instructions
Invite children to decorate a square representing their family or favorite memories.
Encourage children to draw pictures, symbols, people, or meaningful activities.
Support children in describing their artwork and sharing stories aloud.
Combine the completed squares into a collaborative classroom quilt display.
Encourage children to explore and discuss the completed quilt together.

Infant & Toddler Adaptations
Offer larger paper pieces, chunky crayons, glue sticks, stickers, and simple collage materials for children to explore together. Model language about family members, colors, feelings, and familiar experiences while encouraging children to describe their artwork, share personal stories, make creative choices, and participate in collaborative conversations throughout the art experience.
