Build the Playground
This collaborative engineering activity invites children to plan, build, test, and improve a playground using open-ended construction materials. As they work together to solve problems and refine their designs, children strengthen executive function, spatial reasoning, and cooperative learning while discovering that great ideas grow one step at a time.
Instructions
Invite children to talk about what makes a great playground and decide which features they would like to build.
Encourage children to sketch or describe a simple plan before gathering materials.
Work together to build the playground, making changes and solving problems as needed.
Add toy people or animals and pretend to use the finished playground together.
Finish with a gallery walk, inviting children to explain one part they helped create.
